NAPLES (July 26, 2023) – For eight holes Wednesday, golf was a grind for Tyler Collett. He missed a couple of 3-footers and had made only one birdie in the National Car Rental South Florida PGA Championship at Verandah Golf Club.
Then, something clicked. Collet hit it close at 9 for birdie. Then Collet got hotter than the weather, playing like the reigning South Florida PGA Player of the Year.
Starting at No. 12, Collet played the next five holes in 5-under, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 15th that gave him the lead for good, and the PGA Assistant Professional at John’s Island Club pulled away for a four-shot victory.
“It feels good to play that well on the back nine,” said Collet, who finished third in this event last year. “I just couldn’t get anything going on the front. I didn’t make a putt until the ninth hole. I didn’t know where I stood, but I knew I needed to make some birdies.”
Instead, it was the eagle at the 15th hole, when he hit a 3-hybrid from 237 yards to 12 feet that was the shot of the day. He added birdies on the next two holes and finished with a par for a 5-under 67 to finish at 9-under 135.
“It lets me know my game is in a good place,” said Collet, who was scheduled to fly to North Carolina Wednesday night to try and qualify for next week’s Wyndham Championship on the PGA Tour. “I’ve got a lot of golf coming up the next two months.”

Five players tied for second place at 5-under 139: Kyle Horvath (67) of Worthington Country Club, Kyle Schulte (69) of Stoneybrook Golf Club of Estero, Nick Hocker (70) of the Bear’s Club, Andrew Filbert (70) of West Bay Golf Club and Brad Gray (69) of Lost Tree Club.
The top six finishers earned a spot in the National Car Rental Assistant Professional Championship Nov. 14-19 at PGA Golf Club. Joining Collet at the national championship are Horvath, Schulte, Hocker, Filbert and Alan Morin (68-140) of The Club at Ibis.
Domenico Geminiani, a PGA Assistant Professional at Old Corkscrew Golf Club, won last year’s national championship. Defending champion Ryan Fountain (79-161) of the Bear’s Club tied for 60th and Geminiani was 28th (76-148).
The National Car Rental South Florida PGA Assistant Championship is run by the South Florida PGA. Supporting Partners are Srixon/Cleveland/Asics and JaniKing.
