South Florida PGA Hosts East Coast High School Championship at Boca West Country Club
Boca Raton, Florida - Vero Beach High School finished first in the Boys division while St. Andrews High School claimed first place honors in the girls division after weather impacted two days at the South Florida PGA East Coast High School Championship hosted at Boca West Country Club (Fazio II course).
Finishing at 2-under-par, 282 as a team after only 18 holes, Vero Beach High School won the boys division by nine strokes. James Hassel led the for Vero Beach turning in the lowest score card of the tournament at 5-under-par, 66. He carded five birdies with no bogeys en route to taking home the individual boys trophy.
St. Andrews High School wrapped play at 15-over-par, 293-290-583, finishing first place in the girls division. St. Andrews played their best golf throughout round two at 6-over-par, the lowest round for any girls team over two days.
At the end of 36 holes, Amelie Alcantara of St. Andrews High School and Sodia Cherif Essakali of West Lake Prep both finished at even-par, forcing a sudden death playoff. After both girls made par on the first playoff hole, number 18, Alcantar would go onto win in the second playoff hole, number 10 with a par. She finished with rounds of 72-72-142.
Round one was cut short for the girls afternoon wave Thursday because of lighting, making the final round start later than anticipated. With weather affecting the final round, the boys were not able to finish the round, only allowing their first 18 holes to count in scoring. Fortunately, because the girls had the morning wave, they were all able to finish 36 holes.
The event hosted 16 schools from the South Florida area with a total of 114 competitors.
