Justin McCarraher, PGA is our 2017 National Car Rental Assistant Champion
NAPLES (Oct. 5, 2017) - Justin McCarraher, PGA did something Thursday few golfers have been able to do: beat Alan Morin.
In a playoff, no less.
McCarraher, a PGA Assistant Golf Professional at Fiddlesticks Country Club in Fort Myers, made a par on the second playoff hole to win the National Car Rental SFPGA Assistant Championship at The Quarry.
Morin lost his tee shot on the second playoff hole and made a double bogey. That opened the door for McCarraher to win his second section event.
""Playoffs are always tough, especially against a good player like Alan,"" McCarraher said. ""I was fortunate. Alan didn't put his best swing on that tee shot. Nine times out of 10, he's not going to beat himself.""
McCarraher did his part by shooting a 5-under 67 - the low round of the tournament - to come from two shots back and finish tied with Morin, who works as a PGA Assistant Golf Professional at The Falls in Lake Worth, at 6-under 138. McCarraher gave himself an opportunity when he birdied three of his final four holes in Wednesday's opening round that was played with gusts of 35-mph.
""I found something late in the first round and that carried over into today,"" McCarraher said. ""I feel like I've played poorly this summer, so this is kind of surprising.""
Like most PGA Professionals based in Fort Myers, McCarraher was just happy to be back on the golf course after dealing with the destruction left behind by Hurricane Irma.
""None of us have played much golf lately,"" he said. ""We actually got a little lucky today than it didn't rain as much as it was forecast to.""
Kenneth Leech of the Don Law Academy was third, finishing one shot out of the playoff after a 68 left him at 5-under 139. Adam Scrimenti, PGA of Plantation Preserve was fourth (69-140) and Jon McLean of Jim McLean Golf School was fifth (71-141).
Only five players in the field of 67 finished under par for the tournament. Each of them qualified for the National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship Nov. 9th-12th at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie.
The National Car Rental Assistant Championship, staged by the South Florida PGA, is supported by Antigua, Cleveland Golf, Golf Advisor, John Deere, PGA Tour, Srixon and XXIO.
