Earle, Nip Claim Victory at Sandridge Golf Club
Vero Beach - James Earle of Jupiter and Gloria Nip of Port Saint Lucie won the South Florida PGA Junior Medalist Tour event at Sandridge Golf Club Sunday, with Vasili Gianakas of Lauderdale by the Sea earning low honors in the boys 11-12 division.
Despite having to play round one through rain in the morning and wind in the afternoon, Earle carded a two-over opening round of 74, co-leading with Gabriel Holtz of Boca Raton and Ismael Garcia of Port Saint Lucie. Earle’s one-over final round was highlighted by four birdies and an eagle coming at the par-5 12th hole. His 74-73–147 proved enough to hold off Sohan Patel of Weston who finished solo second.
In the girls 13-18 division, and with Sandridge baring its teeth in the windy afternoon conditions, Nip carded two double bogey’s on the back nine, but limited the damage with a strong birdie-birdie finish en route to a three-over 75 opening round, good for a two stroke lead heading into Sunday. Nip led the field this weekend in par 5 scoring average, additionally tying runner-up Katie Carman of Estero with total birdies made.
Despite shooting a four-over opening round 76 to trail Jude Desmond of Pompano Beach by three strokes, Gianakas led a 3-under charge on the back nine for a two-under final round 70 to win by three strokes. Gianakas’ final round was the lowest round to par of any player this weekend. Desmond finished runner-up with a weekend total of 73-76-149.
The two-day, 36-hole Medalist Tour event consisted of 79 SFPGA Junior Tour members with the boys 13-18 champion receiving two AJGA stars with the top-5 finishers receiving one.
The Medalist Tour at Sandridge Golf Club was the second event of the 2022 season. The regular season will continue March 12-13 at Crandon Golf Course in Key Biscayne.
