A Weekend on Florida's West Coast for the Challenge Tour
Challenge Tour players visited Vineyards Country Club for a two-day event on the North Course. Perfect weather and course conditions made for some low rounds from these juniors.
Elijah Zamarron of Sunrise won the boys 13-18 division with an impressive seven-under-par victory. Rounds of 71 and 66 for Zamarron included 11 birdies and a bogey-free back nine during his second round. Lorenzo Rodriguez of Miami and Aiden Arce of Davie finished three-under-par for the tournament, with Rodriguez winning the tiebreak and ultimately taking home a second-place finish. Rodriguez closed out Sunday’s round with an eagle on 18.
Angela Jiang of Coral Gables won the girls 13-18 division with a two-day total of 145 to go one-over-par for the tournament. Jiang carded six birdies during her two rounds. Jamie Lowry of Fort Myers finished three strokes behind Jiang to place second at the tournament. Lowry’s round saw her four birdies.
Sohan Patel of Weston had back-to-back impressive rounds, 68-69, this weekend to win the boys 11-12 division. Patel carded 11 birdies during his two rounds, including four straight birdies to open Sunday’s round. Finishing three strokes behind Patel was Jaden Peterson of Port St. Lucie with a total of six birdies for the weekend.
Nine-year-old Alexandra Phung of Forest Hills, N.Y. claimed the girls 11-12 division title with a two-day total of 160. Fernanda Carrion of Coral Gables finished three strokes behind Phung with 83-80 rounds.
Saturday’s round served as a qualifier for the South Florida Junior PGA Championship. The top five boys and girls from the 13-18 division qualified for the event on June 12-13 at Boca West Country Club.
