Three Teams Declared Champions of SFPGA Pro-Assistant
PORT ST. LUCIE (June 5, 2018) - For the first time, three teams were declared champions of the South Florida PGA Pro-Assistant Championship after a playoff was called because of darkness.
The teams of Roger Kennedy Jr. and John Bednar of Country Club at Mirasol, Jeremy Wells and Trey Sones of Alico Family Golf Center and Chris Phillips and Jordan Burke of Cypress Woods were declared tri-champions after a four-hole playoff at PGA Golf Club was stopped because the players couldn't see.
It was a fortunate break for the team of Phillips-Burke, which dropped out after a bogey on the second hole of the playoff.
""Because we were not able to finish the playoff and determine a champion, we had to revert back to 27-hole scores, which means there were tri-champions,"" said South Florida PGA executive director Geoff Lofstead. ""In my tenure, we have never had this happen.""
The three teams tied at 11-under 97 in the 27-hole event that featured best ball, alternate shot and scramble formats for nine holes on the Wanamaker and Ryder courses. Play was stopped for almost three hours because of lightning.
""It was a long day, but a lot of fun,"" Kennedy said. ""It was just too tough to see. Geoff made the right decision."" Sones agreed. ""I thought Geoff and the staff did a great job of getting the tournament in. There were a couple of tight swings in the playoff, but it was a lot of fun.""
Seven teams tied for fourth place at 10-under: Gene Fieger and Joshua Paulhus of the Club at Pelican Bay, Jonathan Pazdera and David Guy of Cypress Lakes, Tim Turpen and Maddox Morneau of the Preserve at Ironhorse, Jonathan Sutera and Justin Smith of Bonita Bay West, Tom Dyer and Aaron Kelm of Old Marsh, Chris Shultis and Gyles Robin of Veranda Golf Club and Matt King and Bard Warfield of Club at Admiral's Cove. Defending champions Kevin Murphy and Patrick Rada of the McArthur Club finished 20th at 5-under.
The Pro-Assistant, run by the South Florida PGA, is supported by Club Car, Global Golf Sales, Golf Ball Divers Alliance, TaylorMade and the PGA Tour.
