South Florida PGA Hosts Third Annual High School Championship
ATLANTIS, Fla. - The South Florida PGA Foundation hosted the third annual High School Championship on September 27th and 28th in Boca Raton, FL. All boy participants competed at Boca Grove Golf and Tennis Club and all girl participants competed at Boca West Country Club.
High Schools located within the South Florida PGA Section boundaries participated in this two-day, 36-hole event. A total of 25 teams, 15 boys' teams 10 girls' teams, totaling 124 high school students competed this year.
Amelie Alcantara led the way for the girls, shooting a 143 to take individual honors, followed by Jenna Fonda (144) and Maisie Filler (145). Benjimin School, coached by Shelly Jahn, won the overall championship with a two-day team score of 604. Competing on the team were Sarah Beqaj, Jenna Fonda, Kiley Malmberg, Alexa Tiano, Jane Boyland.
On the side, Tyler Stachkunas shot a 144 for top individual medalist with Jake Beber-Frankel (145) taking second and Max Yamin and Alex Heard (146) placing third. Vero Beach High School, made up of Cade Coffey, Ryan Moylan, Carter Dalili, Jackson Hillerand James Hassell totaled a 599 to win the overall championship.
Several PGA members were present at the tournament and coached these high school teams. PGA Professionals included Carla Overhiser, PGA (Oxbridge Academy), Jeff Nixon, PGA (Bishop Verot), Sherri Pla, PGA (The King's Academy), Justin Ahasic, PGA (Gulf Coast High School), Andy Scott, PGA (Bishop Verot), Pam Elders, PGA (St. Andrews), Steve Hanlon, PGA (Vero Beach High School), Mike Richards, PGA (North Broward Prep), Dan McLellan, PGA (Oxbridge Academy) Kevin Compare, PGA (Jupiter Christian), Bobby Conway, PGA (Bishop Verot) and Valerie LaPapa, PGA (Oxbridge).
The High School Championship was created in an effort to provide local high school golf programs with an opportunity to compete in a 36-hole event, better preparing them for the upcoming State Championship.
