South Florida PGA HOPE Graduate Christina Olivarez to Attend PGA HOPE National Golf and Wellness Week
Christina Olivarez, a retired Army Master Sergeant from Atlantis, FL, has been selected to participate in the second annual PGA HOPE National Golf and Wellness Week held at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, MD (Washington, DC) during the week of October 14th-19th.
PGA HOPE National Golf and Wellness Week is a four-day program giving 20 PGA HOPE graduates from around the country the opportunity to enhance their skills in golf while learning new techniques of wellness training.
When the program first launched in 2019, Mary Anderson-Knoll was nominated from the South Florida Section. This experience allowed Anderson-Knoll the tools and resources to be a great mentor and advocate for PGA HOPE since attending the conference two years ago.
PGA HOPE is a charitable foundation of the PGA of America, introducing golf to veterans with disabilities to enhance their physical, mental, social and emotional well-being. Olivarez was nominated by Michelle Goda, former South Florida PGA Foundations Program Coordinator, to be one of 20 veterans selected to take part in this year's program.
“I am really looking forward to meeting these other ambassadors and picking their minds about what they have been doing and learning from them,” she said.
As a graduate from PGA HOPE in 2019 at Okeeheelee Golf course, she now serves as a mentor for three PGA HOPE programs currently in Wellington.
“PGA HOPE has been life changing for me. It helped so much with bringing me out of a dark hole, '' Olivarez said. “It sounds cliche, but it has totally been life changing.”
Additionally, since graduating from the program, she actively recruits veterans for the PGA HOPE program by expressing her passion and love for the game.
Olivarez consistently plays weekly and had the unique opportunity to play alongside Justin Thomas and Jack Nicklaus during a PGA HOPE event last year at the Bear’s Club in Jupiter, Fl.
“I am thrilled when I can go golf, it is so exciting to me now,” she said. “It clears your mind, you concentrate on that ball and you kind of forget everything else, I love it, I love this game.”
