Atlantis, FL -- Jake Dering, a 12-year-old kid from Tualatin, Oregon is the epitome of bravery. Jake was born with an extremely rare genetic condition called otopalatodigital syndrome type 2 (also known as OPD). Otopalatodigital syndrome type 2 is a disorder involving abnormalities in skeletal development and other health problems. Due to Jake’s diagnoses, he has undergone over 23 surgeries and counting. Jake is described by many as being insanely positive and always brave by friends and family. He travels back and forth between Portland and West Palm Beach to see the best surgeons and doctors. At Portland Shriners Hospital, he has undergone spinal decompression and fusion surgery, and the MAGEC rod procedure. Jake is also a patient at Palm Beach Children’s Hospital at St. Mary’s Medical Center receiving multiple surgeries including ankle reconstructive procedures to limb extending operations. During their many trips to Florida the Dering’s frequent the Quantum House. Here families whose children are receiving treatment in Palm Beach County for serious medical conditions find a caring and supportive home to lessen the many burdens they face. Once a week PGA Professionals visit this home bringing golf into children’s lives in attempts to provide an excuse to forget their struggles. Titled “Smiling Fore Life,” this program introduced Jake to PGA Professional Dave Pesacov. It started with one golf lesson from Pesacov, and during years of learning the game Jake discovered that golf was “his jam”.  In Oregon, Dering plays in a fall league and goes to every summer golf camp he can, otherwise you can find him practicing on the range.During a recent visit to St. Mary’s, Pesacov took Jake out for a round of golf a day before his surgery. On a picture from surgery in February that Jake’s mom posted on social media, Dave was found commenting, “Looking forward to seeing you guys at the Quantum House for golf on Wednesday, 3:30! Don’t forget.” Smiling Fore Life has impacted lives in ways many would not recognize. Thanks to PGA Professionals who go above and beyond what the program illustrates, like Dave Pesacov, Smiling Fore Life is so much more than teaching kids the game of golf. It’s providing a reprieve from the monotony these kids call life. We are thankful for all our PGA Professionals who are involved with this program; Dave Cunliffe, Will Lust, Jon Pazdera, David Carse, David Guy, Robin Albright, Mike Jonges, Sebastian Camillo, Gayle Leslie, and Phil Argianas.
