NAPLES (Aug. 21, 2018) - It was a 36-hole tournament, but Alan Morin essentially won the National Car Rental South Florida PGA Assistant Championship with a 7-under 65 in Monday's first round.
Morin, a nine-time Player of the Year in the South Florida PGA who works at The Falls of the Palm Beaches in Lake Worth, had a more workmanlike 2-under 70 Tuesday at Wyndemere Country Club.
Morin made two late birdies to finish at 9-under 135, four ahead of Peter Mogg (69-139) of the Club at Renaissance.
""I probably used up all my putts yesterday,"" Morin said Tuesday. ""I made a few down the stretch today when I needed to. But I was in a position where I had to make sure I didn't do anything crazy and just play steady.""
This was the third time Morin has won this event. He also was victorious in 2016 at Fort Lauderdale Country Club and 2009 at the Club at Renaissance.
""It's a tough tournament to win,"" Morin said. ""There are so many good players here and even more of them have moved down here the last couple of years. It's nice to meet them.""
Even nicer to beat them.
Michael Welch (70-140) of Bonita National Golf Club was third, a shot ahead of Kenneth Leech (71-141) of Don Law Academy.
The top five finishers qualified for the National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship on Nov. 15-18 at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie.
Andrew Filbert, the South Florida PGA's reigning Player of the Year, won a three-way playoff for the fifth spot at 2-under 142 between defending champion Justin McCarraher and Sean McGinnis. Filbert birdied the first playoff hole after making a birdie on his final hole.
This event is presented by National Car Rental and supported by Cleveland Golf/Srixon/XXIO, GolfAdvisor.com, John Deere and the PGA Tour.
