SFPGA Pros Learn how to Teach Veterans HOPE

Last week, our PGA Professionals in Plantation and Puerto Rico received training on how to instruct military veterans in our PGA HOPE program. PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) is a free golf clinic for military veterans that serves as therapeutic rehabilitation to help them assimilate back into civilian life. This program is under the national PGA Foundation umbrella of PGA REACH, and here in south Florida, we have been a part of it since the beginning. In 2015, the SFPGA Foundation hosted one PGA HOPE program for 20 participants. Since then, we have helped over 400 veterans and will host twelve programs in 2019. This life-changing program continues to increase in demand, because of it's success, and requires more hands on the lesson tee.

Part of the program requires instructors be educated in adaptive golf in order to meet the needs of potential students. That is why PGA REACH has accumulated a team to travel around the United States and teach PGA HOPE instructors on how to increase awareness and educate PGA Professionals on how to teach adaptive golf. This National Team includes SFPGA member Judy Alvarez, PGA, who taught the first PGA HOPE program in the United States. Alvarez led a class of ten PGA Professionals at Plantation Preserve Golf Course, in how to best prepared to teaching students with disabilities that might join their next PGA HOPE class.

One upcoming class that our Foundation is looking forward to is the first program set to take place in Puerto Rico this upcoming May. Fort Buchanan Golf Club will be hosting the program, for military veterans in our Island Chapter. Brian Oliver, PGA from the Carolinas PGA on the National Team traveled south to educate the PGA Professionals at Fort Buchanan on sensitivity training and how to better communicate your teaching styles with someone that has a disability.
Professionals that participated in this training are now prepared to give a veteran a new way of life, by simply doing what they do best, sharing the game of golf. To see more images from the training sessions click here now. For more information concerning PGA HOPE in south Florida, click here now.
