Going Through PGA HOPE

July 8th, 2021

"Going through PGA HOPE, was life saving for me. I was in a dark place, I couldn't leave the house, and HOPE gave me a reason. I started looking forward to the lessons. You get to be around other veterans that understand. For that time, you start to let go and just be."

Christina Olivarez
2021-2022 South Florida PGA HOPE Ambassador
Since 2019, PGA REACH has offered the opportunity to twenty military veterans to participate in a conference to cultivate a class of ambassadors for the life-changing program, PGA HOPE. Retired Army Sergeant Christina Olivarez will be headed to Washington DC this fall to serve as our next south Florida HOPE Ambassador.

Christina graduated from the South Florida PGA HOPE program in 2019 and has served as an informal PGA HOPE ambassador ever since. Getting to spend time with other veterans who understand the dark hole veterans can find themselves in, and falling in love with the game of golf together creates a comradery that only HOPE Graduates can understand.

Upon learning she was selected, her initial response was, "WOW! I'm so excited!  I can't believe I got chosen!" This exciting opportunity will send Christina along with 19 other veterans to Washington DC, for four days to receive a tool kit of new skills focused on adaptive golf instruction and impactful wellness training. This curriculum will be an extension to what Veterans have been learning throughout the year at their home PGA HOPE program.

These veterans will experience golf instruction from the most respected PGA members, wellness instruction from the Cohen Veteran Network and get to engage with golf's most iconic figures and share their personal stories and how they have been impacted both on and off the course.

"I'm looking forward to listening to other veterans, to see how HOPE helped them. I can share with them how it helped me," Christina explained. "I am looking forward to spreading the word about HOPE to those who haven't heard about its benefits."

The final day of the event will culminate with a golf outing at Congressional Country Club, where Veterans will have the opportunity to utilize the public speaking and networking skills they learned throughout the week as Ambassadors of the PGA HOPE program.

We are excited to have Christina step into this vital role on ensuring veterans get plugged into this program that can change or maybe save their lives. We look forward to hearing all that she learns from this weekend and how she uses it to impact our local community.
