Crowding the corner of the driving range at Osprey Point Golf Course this Saturday in Boca Raton, veterans from across south Florida heard a tale of turning dreams into reality. Hitting shot after shot from his seated position, honorary lifetime member of the PGA, Dennis Walters brought his golf show to a military audience hosted by the South Florida PGA. Due to an accident in 1974, Walters became paralyzed from the waist down and had to find new ways to achieve his dreams of becoming a professional golfer. Relearning how to hit shots from his swivel seated golf cart, and with a canine sidekick named Bucky, Dennis Walters created a show that expresses to never allow obstacles to become a challenge that can’t be overcome without hard work, dedication, and perseverance.
Many in attendance expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to hear an example of hope and what can be done to keep moving forward. After the presentation, participants were treated to a free lunch from Jersey Mike’s Subs, followed by a wide array of putting competitions with many prizes awarded. Many of those in attendance knew of the event because of their past participation in PGA HOPE. An acronym for “helping our patriots everywhere,” this program is designed to provide local military veterans with an opportunity to learn the game of golf as form of rehab from local PGA Professionals.
