Angela Nip Places Third in Drive, Chip & Putt National Finals at Augusta National
Angela Nip of Port St. Lucie placed third in the girls 14-15 division at the National Drive, Chip & Putt Finals at Augusta National on Sunday, with a total score of 20 points.
“I am very happy that I had the chance to compete,” said Nip. “I feel very proud that I came in third.”
Nip, a South Florida PGA Junior Tour member, was one of 10 girls from around the country to compete in the 14-15 division after advancing through three stages of qualifiers.
With so much media attention surrounding the event, Nip said it was a different atmosphere compared to the other three qualifiers, especially because there were only two balls per station compared to three at the previous qualifiers.
“The nerves were a lot stronger, but it was mostly excitement,” she said. “I just kept drinking water, so that helped.”
Other than getting to compete at the highest stage of Drive, Chip and Putt, Nip said her favorite part of the trip was getting to meet U.S. Open Champion, Bryson DeChambeau who signed her hat and trophy.
At 14, Nip has one more year left to compete in Drive, Chip and Putt and said she learned some valuable lessons from the experience and is hopeful to make it to Augusta again next year.
“I learned a lot from the experience,” she said. “I learned that you need to be more patient, and I have to work on some more stuff with my swing.”
Founded in 2013, DCP is a joint initiative through the Masters Tournament, the United States Golf Association and the PGA of America to grow the game of golf by offering a free nationwide competition to junior golfers everywhere. The South Florida PGA administers 10 local qualifying events throughout the section.
