Gene Fieger, the 2018 Florida Senior Open champion, sits atop the leaderboard following the first round of the Florida Senior Open Championship at West Bay Golf Club.
Fieger posted a 5-under 67 on Monday to hold a one-stroke lead over the field, The Naples resident began his round with a nearly perfect front nine.
He carded five birdies and a double bogey on the eighth hole to head to the back nine at 3-under. Fieger posted a birdie on the 16th hole to move to 4-under and into a three-way tie for the lead. His birdie on the 18th gave him the solo lead, following the first round of play.
Both playing in their first Florida Senior Open, Robin Byrd and Roger Rowland are tied for second at 4-under 68. Byrd started off the day with back-to-back birdies, finishing the front nine at 1-under.
The Satellite Beach resident recorded a bogey-free back nine with three birdies. Rowland posted a bogey-free round, carding two birdies on the front nine and two on the back nine.
